This has been a concern for a while. Professor Hubert (HH) Lamb was the first to broach the subject in material I've read. He thought the sink point would be pushed further south.
The scary thing is, it takes 1,000 years for water to go around the conveyor cycle. So, failure at the Atlantic source would have a potential huge lag around the planet.
The failure of the Atlantic conveyor will have a catastrophic effect on the climate of Europe, which is warmed by the Gulf Stream. I read somewhere that temps could drop 4-5 degrees C if it disappeared.
